Você já ouviu falar das “Challenge Coins”? Elas são moedas trocadas tradicionalmente entre militares americanos, prática que simboliza respeito e reconhecimento.

Geralmente as “Challenge Coins” são moedas que possuem entre quatro e cinco centímetros de diâmetro e seus modelos podem variar entre formas arredondadas, quadradas, retangulares ou com cortes personalizados. Na maioria das vezes essas moedas são feitas de estanho, cobre ou níquel e possuem uma variedade de acabamentos disponíveis, como o revestimento de bronze envelhecido, cobre envelhecido, prata envelhecida, ouro envelhecido, níquel, cobre brilhante, prata brilhante ou ouro brilhante. Os desenhos na moeda são livres, podem ser insígnias de organizações, rostos de homenageados e podem conter também frases usadas como lemas de uma instituição. Algumas moedas são esmaltadas e outras mantém a cor e textura do metal.

As primeiras “Challenge Coins”

É muito difícil saber exatamente quando as primeiras “Challenge Coins” surgiram. Dizem que na Roma Antiga, um soldado era recompensado em dinheiro pelo seu desempenho e quando considerado merecedor, recebia uma moeda a mais no seu pagamento. Alguns relatam que essas moedas de bonificação recebiam uma cunhagem especial com o símbolo da legião a qual o soldado pertencia e, então, os soldados começaram a guardar suas moedas como lembrança, ao invés de gastá-las.

Outra história interessante que remete ao surgimento das “Challenge Coins” a um soldado francês foi capturado por soldados alemães durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial. Os alemães recolheram tudo o que o soldado carregava, exceto uma pequena bolsa de couro pendurada no pescoço, onde ele guardava uma challenge coin. O soldado conseguiu escapar e chegar até uma base aliada, mas como não estava uniformizado e nem em sua unidade, acreditaram que se tratava de um espião e o condenaram à morte. Por sorte, um soldado reconheceu a insígnia gravada na sua moeda e a punição foi adiada. Depois de confirmada a sua identidade, o soldado pôde retornar para sua unidade militar.

O desafio

Segundo a história, os desafios das “Challenge Coins” surgiram na Alemanha depois da Segunda Guerra Mundial. Todos os militares americanos possuíam uma moeda pessoal para identificação e quando reuniam-se em bares eram desafiados a colocá-las sobre a mesa. Aqueles que, por ventura, estavam sem suas moedas eram obrigados a pagar a cerveja de todos os outros que apresentavam as suas “Challenge Coins”.
